A new DOE project to kick off this year in Dr. Zhang’s group!

Dr. Wen Zhang’s team has been awarded a DOE subcontract project through the University of Maryland (the primary awardee) on Photosynthesis-driven microalgal system to mitigate carbon dioxide emission from power plant flue gases. Dr. Zhang’s team will develop and validate the conversion of CO2 in flue gas into nanobubbles to enhance mass transfer of CO2 and utilization toward algal growth. This project will enable collaborations of multiple institutions including University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Argonne National Laboratory, and HY-TEK Bio, LLC.

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have far-reaching environmental and health impacts, causing water, energy, and food insecurity. To address these grand challenges, this collaborative project will design, engineer, and intensify a microalgae-driven carbon dioxide mitigation (MadCom) process as illustrated below to mitigate CO2 emission and produce valuable products.
