This research has garnered funding support from NSF and EPA to evaluate the fundamental science in microwave catalysis and interfacial engineering on filtration membranes. Moreover, New Jersey Health Foundation and New Jersey Economic Development Authority both funded this project to support pilot scale fabrication and demonstration.

Moreover, this project received the 2022 Edison Patent Award from Research & Development Council of New Jersey and the 2023 Grand Prize for University Research in the AAEES Excellence in Environmental Engineering and Science Competition.

This project highlights an award-winning microwave-activated membrane filtration system, developed by Wen Zhang's team at NJIT, which caters to water treatment and air purification. It effectively eliminates a range of pollutants, including PFAS and viruses. This technology has been licensed for commercial deployment in settings like schools, hospitals, train stations, and airports. Now, this prototype system is undergoing site demonstration on campus for further commercialization.
