Explore the Nano World

On May 8th, 2019, Xiaonan Shi and Kaiqin Dong attended the NJWEA 104th John J. Lagrosa Conference and joined the Student Research Poster Competition. 45 students submitted their poster abstracts this year and 28 applicants were selected to present their work during the conference. Our CEE Ph.D. student, Xiaonan Shi won the second place in the doctoral division of the competition. Our CEE master student, Kaiqin Dong won the first place in the master division of the competition. Xiaonan’s topic is “Generation of Nanobubbles and their Agricultural and Environmental Applications”. In her research, she investigated the applications of reactive nanobubbles in seeds germination, plant growth, and algae bloom mitigation and cyanotoxins degradation. This project holds promise in green and sustainable engineering applications in diverse fields (e.g., water/wastewater treatment, food processing, medical applications, and agriculture). Kaiqin’s topic is “Influences of Salinity, DOM and Halogen Radicals in the Photo-degradation of PFOA”. Her research investigated on how halides in water alter photochemical degradation reactions of a model organic pollutant (PFOA) using de-ionized water with spiked sodium chlorite and sodium bromide to generate halogen radicals. This project aims to provide new insights into the implications of the photochemical processes of refractory emerging contaminant degradation (e.g., PFOA) in water system.
